The Rural Voice, 1991-01, Page 39to fulfil their commitment for
purchases under the LTA (long-term
trade agreement) with the U.S.
government.
If you found this whole scenario
too complex to understand, remember
this: U.S. trade hopes have plunged
without Soviet access to this crucial
credit guarantee program. U.S. grain
exports are seen as 50 to 100 million
bushels behind the original USDA
projections. Total European wheat
sales to all destinations are already
four -million tons ahead of last year in
stark contrast to U.S. sales, which are
five -million tons behind last year.
That's a swing of nine -million tons.
The wildcard is: what did the U.S.
give up during the week of November
26 to persuade the USSR to vote with
them regarding the U.N. resolution to
use force to get Iraq out of Kuwait?
Recently we witnessed the abrupt
change of leadership in England.
Margaret Thatcher asked: "Why is it
that we have child cruelty in this age?
Why is it that we have animal cruelty?
Why is it that we have violence? ..
Why is it that people take to
terrorism? Why is it that people take
to drugs? ... Why, when you have got
everything, do some people turn to
those fundamental things which
undermine the whole of civilization?"
Putting her questions into
perspective, the prime minister said:
"For years when I was young and in
politics, with all my hopes, dreams,
and ambitions, it seemed to me and to
many of my contemporaries that if we
had an age where we had good
housing, good education, and a
reasonable standard of living, then
everything would be set and we
should have a fair and much easier
future. We know now that that isn't
so. We are up against the real
problems of human nature."
As the festive season ends, and we
begin a new year, we would do well to
reflect on our human nature and pray
for change - for change begins right
here at home. Even though the world
seems to be rushing to the brink of
disaster, let us all remember the true
meaning of our celebratiuons all year.
Happy New Year to you and yours
and I wish you peace and prosperity in
