better job of growing crops. For many
years, some dairy farmers have grown
crops because they had the land and
needed to put the manure somewhere.
For those farmers to increase profitabil-
ity, both the crop enterprise and the
dairy enterprise must be running at
maximum efficiency. This may force
some changes in the way that we think
about our operations.
Some farmers don't know whether
their enterprises are profitable. Sure,
they are still in business but are all areas
of their farm pulling their own weight?
The Ontario Farm Management
Analysis Project (OFMAP) is available
to help farmers identify strengths and
weaknesses in their specific enterprises
on their farm. This is the first step in
helping yourself to increased profitabil-

Agriculture and Food for details on how
OFMAP can work for you.

According to Feedstuffs magazine,
large feedlots continue to increase in the
United States. In 1962, 23 feedlots with
over 16,000 head capacity produced 8
per cent of U.S. finished cattle. By
1989, 198 of these giant feedlots pro-
duced 51 per cent of the beef.
Seventeen per cent of U.S. beef is
now produced in lots of greater than
100,000 head capacity. The state of
Nebraska alone finishes over 22 per cent
of the U.S. total beef supply.
Feedlots of this size can exert tre-
mendous pressure on processors. They
also have a great influence on the North
American beef industry. One feedlot of
100,000 cattle can supply 400 head per
day to a packing house for an entire year
(250 days). Of course, these plants can
be very efficient because of the pounds
of beef they process.
Perhaps this explains the difficulty
our beef processing industry faces in
competing on a continental or global
