The byword today is rush! You
know when the alarm clock doesn't go
off and the kid next door knocks and
says "Are we milking the cows this
morning?" That's how this day started
— an hour late!!
The Emo Fair is over for another
year and the bodies of the workers are
crying with relief. I don't have the
figures but rumour has it that the num-
bers at the gate are up. Those of us who
worked in the Milk Booth believe it.
When scooping ice cream, it isn't just
the wrist that gets a work out, the whole
upper back gets into the act. One thing
I can say for sure is we made 1,200
milkshakes, then add innumerable
cones, some milk and chocolate milk,
and you know why right arms and both
feet were beginning to protest by sup-
pertime on Sunday.
The Rainy River Federation of Agri-
culture meeting was held on August 2,
1990, in the Emo Agricultural Office.
Those present were: Wayne Flatt, Gary
Esselink, Gertie Bujold, Linda Arm-
strong, Kim Hunsperger, Kristine Car-
penter, Shirley Morrish, Mark Husser,
and Jacquelyn Hunsperger.
The Farm Progress Building Com-
mittee brought the new banner in for us
to preview. It looks good upon the Farm
Progress Building. Kristine reported
that there will be 41 booths this year.
The committee has called the set up for
6:30 p.m.
The Cattlemen's representative
wasn't there but the sale date was con-
firmed for October 6, 1990.
Mark Husser reported that the Emo
Research Station was officially opened
on August 1, 1990 and an Open House
and tour of the test plots was scheduled
1
for August 7, 7:00 p.m. A bus load from
Dryden planned to come and tour the
seed cleaning plant at Larry Lamb's
earlier in the day.
Gary Esselink brought the word that
a milk sign is up at Divenvoider's and
we should take notice as we drive home
from Fort Frances.
The nominating committee of
Kristine Carpenter and Linda Arm-
strong will be looking for people willing
to serve on our board of directors and
help keep our organization strong.
It was moved by Gary Esselink and
seconded by Shirley Morrish that we set
up an all candidates meeting for August
27, in the Stratton Separate School.
Linda Armstrong and Jacquelyn Hun-
sperger are to look into it.
Bruce Ward stepped into the meet-
ing and on questioning about some
crops here, it was learned that we have a
great deal of hay in the District for sale.
There is a market for more second cut if
it analyses out well, 16 to 18 per cent
protein or above. The price is not bad if
it is top quality and 70 to 80 per cent
alfalfa.
Bruce is considering a conference -
type meeting for the fall. If you have any
ideas for speakers or topics, give the
Agricultural Office a call and they will
work on it.
Our Annual Meeting Dinner and
Dance will be Saturday, October 13,
1990, in the Barwick Hall. The commit-
tee is looking into getting someone to
come and speak with information on the
stable funding proposals being brought
forward just now.
The new site for Crop Check was
given an official new name at its grand
opening on August 1, 1990. It is the
Emo Research Station. The election call
two days before made some changes in
plans. David Ramsay, Minister of Agri-
culture and Food, was unable to make
connecting flights at the necessary time
so he was ably represented by Clare
Rennie, Assistant Deputy Minister.
Each platform guest brought greet-
ings. They were: Jim Steward, reeve of
Emo; Cecil Wilson, Reeve of the Mu-
nicipality of Chapple; Bruce Lawrence,
Area Manager for Government Serv-
ices; Gary Silwarskip, Ministry of
Northern Development; and David
Beattie, Director of New Liskeard Col-
lege.
Reverend Louis Pelletier gave the
dedication. Kim -Jo Bliss is the Crop
Check site manager and is assisted by
Leonard Teeple and Dwayne Roen.
