GRAIN MARKETS
dropped to 55 to 57 cents over July.
FEED GRAINS
Barley usage has been fairly
good and Ontario barley supplies have
trickled onto the market with the result
being stable prices in the $120 to $135
range, depending on loading facilities.
On the other hand, mixed grain has
been offered in fairly large quantities
to a rather lacklustre marketplace,
with prices in the $115 area.
Western grain prices have held
firm, with barley being offered at
$140 to $141 per mt. at the bayports.
Oat prices have been under pres-
sure lately because of the large supply
still sitting on farms and a very limit-
ed market to absorb it.
Corn crop progress in Ontario
is quite spotty, with a large acreage
having to be replanted in southwest-
ern Ontario. Even some of the corn
that wasn't replanted has been very
slow to germinate and grow until the
past 10 days. Watch the progress of
the crop carefully, as it is behind about
three weeks at this point and we'll
need timely rains and warm tempera-
tures to keep the crop going.
Soybeans have generally benefit-
ted from good rains, even though
some acreage was a little late getting
planted. Stands and germination have
been fairly even and the crop looks
good right now.
The markets will continue to be
very volatile and there is still lots of
time for the market to strengthen. I'm
still moderately bullish towards corn
based on planting problems as well as
usage. But soybeans will need either
bad news regarding the crop or good
news on usage to boost prices. Don't
get too carried away in dreamland
about high soybean prices this year.
A price near 7.00/bu would be a target
to aim for. Corn prices, on the other
hand, bear some watching.0
