lion in the last five years on subsidies to
Canadian agriculture.
Both Bob Down, representing the
Huron County Corn Producers, and
Brenda McIntosh of the federation's
Environment Committee said there
should be a push for an ethanol/metha-
nol blend of gasoline, and McIntosh said
environmental concerns must be ad-
dressed with more re -using, recycling,
and reducing. "Huron County farmers
do not want Huron used as a dumping
ground for wastes from other areas."
They also want to see more emphasis
placed on soil and water conservation.
"Studies from the University of Guelph
show it costs farmers money both in
higher initial expenses and reduced in-
come to switch to soil conservation
practices, so continued and increased
support is essential," they said.
Chris Hills, president of the Huron
Pork Producers, said low returns for
pork are hurting the industry. "In Huron
alone, we have lost over 200 pork pro-
ducers in the last 12 months." And that
figure might have been higher, he said,
if there hadn't been a reduction in feed
costs because of low grain prices.
"The highly acclaimed Free Trade
Agreement with the U.S. has failed
miserably to live up to its promise of
freer and greater access to the U.S.
market for Ontario pork," Hills said.
Grey Federation: At the Grey fed-

the new Goods and Services Tax will be
"an added burden" for farmers already
overloaded with paperwork.
The federation asked in its brief to
MP Gus Mitges, MPP Ron Lipsett, and
a representative of MP Perrin Beatty if
farmers could be certain that the 13 per
cent Manufacturers Sales Tax would be
removed before the GST was applied.
Land severances in rural areas was
one of the main topics at the meeting in
Markdale. The Grey federation is now
analyzing 33 briefs on land use policy
which were presented to the federation
in March. The federation will be issuing
a formal report on the issue soon.
"One concern expressed in the briefs
was that farmers want to be protected
from urban dwellers and that the right -
to -farm (legislation) be put in full force
on the deed of the new property owner,"
the federation told the politicians.
Grey Warden Gerald Shortt told the
