Trials have also shown that with
treated silage an animal retains 5 per
cent more of the nitrogen intake than
with untreated silage.
Thomas estimates that about two
million tonnes of silage are being treated
in Canada annually. But inoculation is
not an alternative to good management,
he adds. "It's just another tool in a good
management package."0

CONDITIONER
John Deere's model 1600 mower -
conditioner features a cutting platform
in 12, 14, and 16 -foot widths.
Twin knife drives, timed and pow-
ered by a cogged belt reinforced by
Kevlar, produce a knife speed of 1764
strokes per minute. The knife drive
cases are enclosed in oil to reduce wear
and eliminate the need for lubrication or
adjustment.
Because the conditioning rolls are
carried in the mainframe, rather than
being part of the cutting platform, plat-
form flotation is more responsive to
changing ground contours and field
obstructions.0
HITCHES REDUCE
WEAR ON TRUCKS
Cushion hitches from Schuck Indus-
tries reduce wear on truck drive trains
and increase gas mileage.

molded urethane cushions to absorb
end -thrust shock. A high-density poly-
