BUSINESS TRENDS
We have started selling the Dovetec stove to
burn shelled corn. We are heating our new
building, 50 x 105, with some distressed
corn, at an average of 1 1/4 bushels/day of
good corn, but more of the distressed corn.
INVENTORY AND SALES
Our inventory is $1,244,404.86. Sales so far
this year are slow, but usually are at this time.
Auction sales are like a dealers' convention.
Farmers meet and discuss crops and ideas
and when they don't see what they want and
the weather turns good there is a mad rush at
the last— and often it gets too late to get their
trade-in ready so we end up with it until next
year. Sales are down some by units but dollar
sales are up. Grass seeders for ATV-ATCs
are a short wait. Some financing is available
but either .05 percent interest for cash or a
low like 7 per cent a year for three years.
THE FREE TRADE AGREEMENT
It is affecting business. Most farmers are
pessimistic. Cattle are down, milk and
poultry quotas are uncertain, swine are
unsure, and cash cropping is at a loss.
THE GOODS AND SERVICES TAX
The GST will make a lot of unnecessary
bookkeeping. I understand it can be done
with a computer. On smaller items, farmers
with poor books will not bother to collect and
government will be ahead. Some farmers are
buying now before the tax.
McGAVIN FARM SUPPLY LTD.
We carry Ford New Holland, and have anew
tractor series. We are overstocked with
inventory, and it looks like a good year. We
offer 1 per cent financing for 18 months on
hay and forage. We sell Ford lawn and
garden equipment from 8 hp to 33 hp, and
have a mechanic trained in servicing.
