OPINION
WHERE WILL YOUR NEXT MEAL COME FROM?
BUY LOCALLY GROWN FOOD
My last visit to Toronto included a
tour of the Food Terminal. It soon
became apparent just how much we rely
on imported food for our winter diets.
Scores of trucks deliver thousands of
tonnes of fresh produce to the terminal
daily, awaiting a retailer's cautious
purchase.
I eventually began to ponder how
heavily our food system depends on
imports. It seems to me that we are
vulnerable to a number of possible dan-
gers, including shipping hassles, dock-
worker strikes, increases in the price of
fuel and fuel shortages, trucking delays
or travel blockages. Top these possibili-
ties with the remote chance that a better
market is found elsewhere or that ex-
porting farmers refuse to produce for
export or that exporting nations use food
as a weapon.
But "Oh!" you say, "our staples are
produced here in Ontario." True. But
who controls the system? A large por-
tion of our grain is handled and traded by
a precious few transnationals. Where
will these traders send the staples if there
is a very lucrative market elsewhere in
the world? History shows the starving
Irish exporting wheat during the potato
famine, the Ethiopians exporting white
beans during the recent famine there,
and the people of the Philippines starv-
ing while we enjoy bountiful pineapple
supplies.
Who would you be most likely to
trust for a stable supply of fresh food,
long into the future? Would it be the
farm family next door or the transna-
tional corporation on the TSE or Dow -
Jones? If your answer is the farm fam-
ily, then maybe you should consider
searching for Ontario -grown food. If
future supply is a concern of yours,
perhaps you should plan to freeze or can
fresh Ontario produce while it is still in
season.
In what better way could you ensure
the source of your family's next meal
than by supporting Ontario's family
farmers?0
