plant, but will be offering contracts to
local growers for 1991. Under consi-
deration are one, two, or, preferably,
three-year contracts.
The company, Fletcher says, hopes
to offer contracts on either a tonnage
basic or an acreage basis, depending
on the option preferred by growers.
Farmers interested in growing pure al-
falfa for the plant are invited to a one -
day intensive -management seminar at
the Underwood Community Centre on
February 21, and are asked to pre -
register by calling Canadian Agra at
519-396-9124.
Alfalfa in Bruce County is a
"very minimal crop at the moment,
particularly pure alfalfa," Fletcher
says, noting that the company is aware
of 3,000 acres nearby that are growing
the pure alfalfa Canadian Agra needs.
Producers under contract with
Canadian Agra, Fletcher explains,
will select their own alfalfa variety
and buy their own seed from the
company of their choice. Only if the
market were being exploited because
of the local rush might Canadian Agra
step in to buy seed in bulk, he says.
Fertilizer, insecticide, and weed con-
trol would be the farmer's responsibil-
ity under the tonnage contact option.
Under an acreage option, the company
would be willing to negotiate that
responsibility.
