$150; a donkey for $300; a dairy cow
for $600 and a water buffalo for
$700.
The costs of the animals include
training in husbandry and pen
construction, pen materials,
vaccinations and occasionally food
for the family so the animal can
survive long enough to reproduce.
On the crops side of things, you
can donate four olive trees for
$30 or 10 fruit trees for $60.
For $125 you can get an amazing
Moringa tree, a fast-growing,
drought -resistant, multi-purpose tree
that's an excellent source of nutrition
and income for struggling African
families. Its leaves are a super -food
that contains seven times the vitamin
C of oranges, four times the calcium
and twice the protein of milk, four
times the vitamin A in carrots, and
three times the potassium of bananas.
The Moringa can be used to produce
animal feed, cleansers, medicine, and
rope fiber—additional sources of
income.

provide one hive and a beekeeping
kit, producing up to 50 kg of honey a
year and beeswax for a year-round
income.
Much of the distribution is done
through a revolving loan system
where the family receives an item
and repays in kind — for instance
through the offspring of the animal.
This helps, says World Vision, to
ensure individual commitments and
spreads the benefits throughout the
community.
Families are also given nutritional
training so they can get the most
benefit from their animals.
The gifts are selected to help
families meet pressing needs and
earn household income. A sheep, for
example, can provide milk and meat
for family nutrition and the wool can
be sold or used to make clothes. The
ewes often have twins or triplets that
can be sold for family income. Even
the manure can help fertilize crops.
The gifts are purchased locally,
ensuring that fruit trees, for example,
are well-suited to the local
environment and that the purchase
supports the local economy. Buying
locally also saves on transportation
costs.
