Mabel's.
"It's nice to know the press has its
priorities straight," said George
McKenzie, throwing his paper down
on the table in disgust one morning
when the front page was all about the
wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie
Holmes.
"I mean farmers can be going
broke because our government won't
get off its ass and help us compete
with the American subsidies but that
doesn't get a word in the paper. But
let some movie stars get married and
that's really important."
"I don't know, I gotta admit that
in terms of economic impact the
Cruise wedding might just top the
total revenue of all farms in Canada,"
said Cliff Murray. "I mean just figure
Mabel's Grill
out how much it cost to fly all those
Hollywood stars to Italy and bed
them down in digs that will be up to
their standards."
"Yeh and what kind of wedding
gift do you buy for a guy who makes
$20 million a picture?" wondered
Dave Winston.
"That'd be harder than finding
something to buy for your
grandchildren for Christmas," said
Mabel from over at the counter.
"Oh please," moaned George.
"My wife threw up her hands and
told me I could buy my grandsons'
presents this year. I mean if it's
something they really want, their
parents have already got it for them."
"God forbid any kid should have
to actually wish and dream for more
than a couple of hours," said Cliff.
"I don't think kids today know
how to wait," said George.
"I don't know," said Molly
Whiteside as she filled the coffee
cups, "did you see all those kids
camped outside the electronics stores
for two nights so they'd be first in
line to get that new video game
player — whatever its name is."
