majority of whom are private
woodlot owners, says Todd.
It costs just $25 a year to belong
to the Association. There has been
much discussion over the years as to
whether to become a chapter of
OWA but the membership fee would
have to increase if that was to happen
and members felt it was more
important to encourage membership
at the local level with a low fee.
Members are entitled to free
admission to many of the activities of
the group. In addition, when Todd
sends out minutes of meetings, he
usually includes two or three pages
of coming events and information
such as the latest research on the
emerald ash borer or woodlot
management techniques.
The Association often partners
with others to put on events.
On Sunday, October 21, for
instance, the Association and the
Bruce Resource Stewardship
Network will co-sponsor a
conference called "What's Bugging
Your Woodlot", with information on
Dutch elm disease, pine false
webworm, butternut canker, emerald
ash borer, sudden oak death, 'and
Asian long -horned beetle. (The event
is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the
Elmwood Community Centre. Pre-
registration is required through the
Ontario Forestry Association, 1-800-
387-0790 and the cost is $20 in
advance.) '
Each spring the Association is one
of a number of partners, including the
Grey Association, in sponsoring the
Grey -Bruce Woodlot Conference at
Elmwood, two days of presentations
and activities to bring woodlot
owners together and increase their
knowledge.
Throughout the summer there are
forest walks at different woodlots in
the county for members of the
association.
The association also takes part in
The Roots of Bruce and the Purple.
Valley Maple Syrup Festival.
It also maintains a booth at
various events to answer questions
and hand out brochures that give
information on the Association and a
membership application.
The woodlot association is a great
way for like minded people with like-
minded interests to come together to
sham their interests and knowledge,
