their own emotions and fears. It also
offers encouragement and shows how
people who have differences in
opinion can come together for the
good of all.
The other purpose of this play is
to communicate. to non -farmers what
is really going on in the rural
community. "They may be dimly
aware of the crisis that farmers have
been through," says Chislett, but
watching how the family struggles
with various challenges helps put a
human face on the issue.
It is a wonderful feeling when it
goes right — the audience really has a
great sense of ownership, adds
Coates. This can also be a liability if
the play happens to get the feeling of
the situation wrong. "If you don't
get it right, you hear about it loud
and clear," says Coates, adding that
he has had lengthy discussions about
plays with people on the streets of
the village.
While the script itself sets the
story, individual actors
have a large influence over
how the play comes together. "It is a
collaborative process," says Coates.
The actors' interpretation of the role
determines the feeling of the
production. They are putting their
signature on it, he says. The actors in
this play have been really essential in
bringing the human-ness forward in
responding to the crisis.
The first play did allow people to
share their experiences, says Chislett.
They talked about how they survived
the situation and what strengths they
found. "Harvest" is trying to bring
out the point that effective action
' requires farmers and farm groups to
get together to put forward a unified
message.
"Sometimes you feel like you are
fighting apathy in the world. More
people fight over a crust of bread
than the crown jewels," says Chislett,
and this occurs in many areas of life.
While a lot of things in the world
have improved, the situation in
agriculture is one that has not. But
that is not to say that it will continue
a downward trend, she adds. Live'
theatre that deals with real issues
raises questions, which brings people
together and can result in real,
positive solutions. "Don't get
discouraged, don't give up. Know
you are not alone."0
