The Rural Voice, 2006-07, Page 35word. Let's stand up and be proud.
"One of the biggest and most
important experiences of my life was
when I did a feast at the University of
Guelph." It made her realize how rich
and diversified Ontario's food system
is and what role Guelph had played
in it, she said.
She then helped Rob
MacLaughlin, dean of OAC put on a
feast for the 80th birthday of former
Lieutenant Governor Lincoln
Alexander at the Royal York Hotel in
Toronto. With the hotel's chef she
created a $500 -a -plate meal of
Ontario foods.
Perhaps the best indication of the
role the McCully Centre can play in
educating future consumers came
from Barb Hacking, a teacher at
Avon School in Stratford who has
been bringing students to McCully
Farm since the beginning.
"As both a parent and as an
educator I've been visiting this farm
for many, many years, and I'm
always amazed at the uniqueness and
the wonder of each visit," she said.
"It's always different and you never
know what you're going to see.
During the various seasons there is a
variety of activities from maple syrup
tours in spring to pumpkins in fall."
She said Pullen and his staff are
always excited to share the
secrets of the farm and never
get bored. A farm visit always
enhances the school curriculum,
Hacking said, helping children learn
about a healthy living, the
environment and where their food
comes from.
The next trend in education is
differentiated learning: trying to meet
the needs of all the children in a
class, she said. "When you come to a
place like this, every child is happy,
every child is learning, every child is
engaged and when they go back to
the classroom, they have things to
write about; their pictures are much
more detailed and colourful. It helps
makes classroom learning much
more meaningful, and personal. it
helps make learning fun."
In a world where kids spend so
much time on computers, a visit to
the farm re -introduces them to the
simple pleasures of seeing a butterfly
collecting nectar from a flower. "It
helps kids get in touch with nature
but also think about the realities of
life."0
