have title to the property. The
McCully Rural Learning Centre will
operate and manage the property,
itself. I think this is a very unique
partnership. I'm not aware of another
partnership like that existing in
Ontario. It's going to be quite a
challenge, but one both groups look
forward to."
"What the Thames -Talbot Land
Trust allows us to do," explained
Pullen, "is partner up to maintain the
environmental stewardship on the
property while we look after the farm
and the school tours and the group
tours."
There were plenty of admirers for
the Centre at A Taste of Spring.
"I've always been inspired by the
vision of Dave and his family," said
John Wilkinson. MPP for Perth
Middlesex.
Wilkinson said that one of the
realities today is to recognize the
rural/urban divide in a province that
is primarily suburb and urban and has
lost its connection with its rural
roots.

30 THE RURAL VOICE
"This (Centre) is a great example
of how our community is putting
itself in a position where it can roll
out the red carpet — or a green
carpet — so that people from the city
and from the suburbs, people who are
not connected to the land anymore, as
part of their regular day-to-day (life),
have a great opportunity, a
welcoming place, a visionary place,
to come to an reconnect.
"Because what I think has been
lost in our society is the
understanding that everything comes
from the land and everything goes
back to the land. And that is
something that you don't learn in a
book; that is something that has to be
experienced."
Maude Barlow, National
Chairperson of The Council of
Canadians, was on hand to praise the
concept and the need to get the
message out about the importance of
agriculture.
"You are the antidote to the global
corporation," she said.
Barlow said that she had shared
the stage with Globe and Mail
columnist John Ibbitson on
several occasions when they were
both recently on tour promoting
books. Ibbitson actually said,
according to Barlow, that if farming
can't exist on its economic merits, it
should be allowed to disappear.
Canada would continue as a
collection of cities with bush in
between. When asked where the food
came from the answer was that
Canada can import its food, she said.
Renowned food fan and author
Anita Stewart praised the concept of
local food production.
"What you're doing is so
important," she told the Pullens and
their staff. "The food miles you're
experiencing here are almost zero.
That's really good. (Food miles) use
greenhouse gas emissions and other
things. Food tastes better. It's local.
It puts money into your farmers'
pockets. Farmers do feed cities. I
know that.
"Eating is absolutely an
agricultural act," Stewart said.
"Wendell Berry said that I don't
know how many years ago. But I
believe profoundly that shopping is a
political act. However it's not all
doom and gloom and we can
celebrate. Pride is not a four-letter
