The Rural Voice, 2006-07, Page 31make some real change as to how
farmers are treated in this country.
"We all know that the vast
majority of land in southwestern
Ontario is farm and it is intricately
linked to the environment and also to
our small rural communities. And
that is what this McCully Centre for
Rural Learning is all about: trying to
bring together the food community,
the environmental community, the
rural community development people
and people in agriculture to make
some real change in various areas."
In partnership with the Guelph -
based Rural Learning Association
(RLA), the McCully Centre for Rural
Learning was formed with a five -
member board with a number of
professional advisors. As a registered
charity RLA allows people to make
donations and get taxation receipts.
The vision for the McCully Centre
is that there will be a building created
near the farm market where groups
from all walks of life and all ages
will come together and look up the
hill toward the farm and see the
pastures and trees, the reforested
areas and possibility two or three
wind turbines to power the whole
place.
"I think it's a vision that so many
people share that it can't help but go
forward," Pullen says. "We're on the
brink of launching a capital campaign
which will run over the next 12
months to make it all happen."
The first step in the process will
be helped by a grant of
$85,300 over 15 months by the
Trillium Foundation. Sharon Weitzel
from the Grey -Bruce -Huron -Perth
regional volunteer grant review team
for Trillium Foundation was on hand
at A Taste of Spring to present a
ceremonial cheque and explain that
the money would go towards
development of policies, procedures
and partnerships to increase
volunteerism and other resources.
At the same event, Weitzel
announced that $57,000 over two
years has been awarded to the
Thames -Talbot Land Trust to
increase the organization capacity of
the land trust.
Muriel Andreae of the six-year-
old Trust explained: "The plan is that
it will be a partnership which will
achieve both conservation and
agricultural goals. The land trust will
