Help with planning
a value-added
enterprise
Various programs can help
farmers and small food
processors to plan a value-
added enterprise. The Canadian
Farm Business Advisory Services
offers the following programs.
Farm Business Assessment: For a
$100 fee. eligible producers can
receive up to five days' worth of
consultation services.
Up to three days of consulting
advice is provided to review your
farm's past and current situation,
discuss objectives, and identify
options to meet your business goals.
A consultant will provide up to
two days of expertise to help assess
the action plan for your preferred
option for increasing profitability.
A follow-up, one -day consult-
ation is available to discuss progress
and offer further advice.
Specialized Business Planning
Services: Eligible producers can
receive up to a 50 per cent refund.
to a maximum of $8.000 assistance
per individual farmer and a
maximum refund of $25,000 for a
group of four or more, to offset the
cost of hiring a consultant to
provide advice on diversification
and other services. Diversification
plans can include such activities as:
agritourism, organic production or
non-agricultural enterprises
designed to enhance you farm
income.
Planning and Assessment for
Value -Added Enterprises
(PAVE): Eligible producers can
receive up to a 50 per cent refund.
to a maximum of $10.000 per
individual farmer or $25,000 fora
group of three or more, to help
cover consulting fees for feasibility
assessments and business planning
services for value-added projects.
The service allows producers to
fully assess the opportunities and
risks before investing further in
capital and effort. Value -adding
can include things like separating,
grading, cleaning and packaging;
further food processing and
marketing; and developing and
marketing non-food products.0
