There's a requirement for a
professional to design the
construction or expansion of a
storage, including any monitoring
system.
For farmers who favour liquid
manure storage, options range from
under -floor storage within the barn,
cement storage tanks outside the
barn, relatively -new above -ground,
glass -lined steel tanks and even
earthen manure lagoons.
For many people building new
barns in recent years. underbarn
storage has been the favourite choice.
Under -barn storage costs about 20
cents a gallon. As a bonus, the roofed
storage also prevents rain and snow
from getting into the effluent, thereby
reducing the amount of manure that
has to be hauled to the fields.
Others argue there isn't as much
of an odour issue with the underfloor
tanks with no wind to blow across
the top of the tank. There's also the
out-of-sight/out-of-mind argument of
perception. If neighbours don't see
your outdoor manure tank, they don't
think so much about it.
Under -barn storage also requires
the shortest minimum distance
setbacks of any liquid manure option.
But just because the under -floor
storage is out of sight, doesn't
mean it can be out of mind.
The pit still requires periodic
inspections and cracks need to be
repaired. In one case, one of the
support walls within the tank
collapsed sending the slatted floor of
the barn crashing down and killing
some pigs.
While underfloor storage is an
attractive option for new barns, for
those who need additional storage
capacity an outside storage is a more
likely solution.
These separate storage facilities
have advantages, both short-term and
possibly for the future. In the short
term, these outdoor facilities are
easiest to agitate and to empty. As
farmers explore the possibility of
power generation from methane.
these tanks are far more adaptable
than other options.
The outdoor storages also offer
the security of less worry about
dangerous gases circulating into the
barn when the manure tank is being
