"I guess I'll never doubt the
power of politics again," said Dave
Winston the other morning as he
brushed the snow from his shoulders
and took off his scarf and touque.
"How do you mean?" wondered
George McKenzie who had arrived
earlier. "We're still losing money and
the government doesn't seem to
care." •
"Oh, I didn't mean politicians
ability to actually make things
better," said Dave. "I just meant —
well, have you noticed the weather
lately?"
"How can I help but notice," said
Cliff Murray. "I mean we've been
paying lately for that nice weather in
December and January."
"That's what I'm talking about,"
said Dave. "When did the weather
change? Just a week or so after the
election campaign ended. All that hot
air disbursed and suddenly we got
winter again."
"Gee and I was blaming it on
Wiarton Willie," said Molly
Whiteside as she filled Dave's cup
with coffee. "I mean here we already
had spring and he was predicting an
early spring. That's like waving a red
flag in front of a bull."
"I always figured the whole thing
about Willie was a lot of bull,"
grumbled George.
"That warm spell did coincide
nicely with the election campaign
didn't it," said Cliff. "I mean we had
an early winter there for a while but
when the campaign heated up the
snow melted and it stayed warm right
past election day."
"And have you noticed how quiet
it's been since then," said Molly. "I
mean there's been the fuss about
David Emerson all right, but the
opposition parties have been so quiet,
for the most part. Sort of like the
calm that comes after a big snow
storm."
"Of course it can't stay that way,"
said Cliff. "Just like that calm after
the storm the weather eventually
gets riled up again and the opposition
parties will too once Parliament is
back in session."
"Wouldn't it be nice if they didn't
get all stupid and silly with their
criticism," said Molly. "I mean I'd
really be ready to vote for a party in
the next election if they didn't think
that just because they were in
opposition they had to oppose
everything."
"Well, I'm thinking of hiring
Stephen Harper as my crop advisor,"
said Dave.
"Do I sense a nutrient
management issue coming up?"
wondered Cliff.
"No, I mean here's a guy who
knows how to make a silk purse out
of a sow's ear," said Dave. "I mean
he lets the Liberals raise all the
money and do all the effort to get
David Emerson elected, then he picks
him up for nothing. It's kinda like
having George pay to plant my crop
for me this spring and I get the
money at harvest time."
"Yeh, except with prices the way
they are you'd better hope I harvest it
for free too," said George.
"When you think about it, what
Harper's done is a little like the deal
the ethanol plants and other consum-
ers are getting," said Cliff. "I mean
the American taxpayer pays subsidies
so they have cheap corn and such,
but Canadian companies and con-
sumers don't have to spend a penny
on subsidies but still get cheap stuff
as if they were paying for subsidies."
"I guess people are getting used to
that kind of thing," said Dave. "I
mean look at all the people who want
to earn Canadian wages when they
work, but when they shop, they want
to buy things made with Chinese or
Indian wages. Even the autoworkers
want cheap stuff from Wal-Mart
while they make their 30 bucks an
hour." •
"And who says there's no such
thing as a free lunch," said George.
"Certainly not me," said Molly as
she slapped down the guys' bills.0
