go up. Corn, especially, has the
genetics to withstand drought much
better than even five or six years ago
and i think trend -line yields will
continue to move higher in the com-
ing years. Soybeans, it seems, only
need a good timely rain in August to
produce a crop. Well, actually that is
not totally correct, but if you got rain
in August, it sure made a difference.
This year, we did have much more
than normal sunshine throughout the
growing season and 1 am sure this
had a great affect on yields.
Now the question is, "How to
market the crop you have harvested?"
Corn basis is strong and although it
may get a little stronger, the basis at
the very least should be sold. I do not
think we will see much movement in
futures prices until talk begins about
2006 planting intentions. My thought
is that corn acres will be down
substantially from 2005, simply
because of high nitrogen and fuels
costs. A decline in corn acres will
mean an increase in wheat and
soybean acres. I think this will
happen in Ontario a well as the U.S.
Producers may want to have a fair
percentage of their soys sold before
spring since by then we will be
hearing about planting intentions in
the U.S. and we will know how South
America fared with their crop.
The main thing to keep in mind is
that there is an ample supply of both
corn and soybeans in North America.
Producers must be ready to jump on
any decent price improvement in the
coming months and definitely do not
leave it until there is a cash crunch.0
