August 17, 2005.
The day of the wedding turned out
beautiful. Not a cloud in the sky and
the dresses fit and the shawls were
finished. The bride, as all brides are,
was beautiful and glowing. The
groom played his violin to bring the
bride and her father down the aisle.
Very moving and gorgeous all told.
The following Friday I had the
long-awaited surgery on my left
ankle and am now learning to
navigate in a wheelchair in a house
not equipped for handicapped
accessibility. Except for a few
bruised knuckles I'm not doing too
badly. I will no doubt learn a lesson
in patience as I cannot put weight on
the ankle for three months. The other
half of this duo is learning his way
more fully around the kitchen and
laundry. Most of his efforts have
been surprisingly efficient. Going up
and down stairs will no doubt be an
ongoing challenge and will limit
where I go and what and who I see.
The August meeting of the Rainy
River Federation of Agriculture was
held in the Emo Curling Club on the
first with Rick Boersma, Linda
Armstrong, Kim Jo Bliss, Angela
Halverson, Betty Salchert, James
Gibson, Kris Carpenter and
Jacquelyn Hunsperger present.
President Trish Neilson was on
holiday with her family and vice-
president Rick Boersma chaired the
meeting.
Tomorrow the exhibitors in the
Farm Progress Building will be
setting up in anticipation for the fair's
start later in the day. By the time you
are reading this you will he
remembering just how full the Emo
arena was. Congratulations to the
committee of Linda Armstrong and
Kim Desserre. A full house. Good
job. Thank you to the exhibitors from
Ottawa to Winnipeg.
There are no entrants for the Farm
Beautification so the decision has
been made to cancel this part of the
fair and maybe bring something else
in, in its place. This could be brought
back at a later time and perhaps there
will be more interest after a break of
a few years.
It has been noted at a couple of
meetings that the signs at the
roadsides at each end of the Rainy
River Valley need some upgrading
and if anyone has some ideas please
contact your director as we are
looking for help and ideas.
The entertainment committee
reported on the research they had
done for setting the annual general
meeting. The consensus of the
meeting was to go with Stratton on
October 22, 2005. The committee
was given the responsibility to
complete the plans and bring the final
report to the next meeting.
The issue of shooting down, or
across, the roadway has been referred
to the Ministry of Natural Resources
and a presentation will be made to the
municipalities. The meeting agreed
that it is not only a safety issue but it
is unlawful.
James Gibson reminded us that
there could possibly be a fourth sale
at the sales barn as a cleanup. On the
note of the sales barn, last column I
made a mistake. I wrote James
Stewart instead William Stewart was
Agriculture Minister when the barn
was built and opened. My thinking
cap must have slipped over one eye
when I wrote that sentence. Please
remember the sales date September 3
for the second sale and October 1 for
the third sale of this year.
Kim Jo reported that the new vet,
Dr. Heather is being fully initiated.
The Nor -West Animal Clinic has
been very busy and she has met many
of the district's finest.
Angela and Kim Jo remind us that
there are rooms and a bus booked for
Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan
and would like to know if you are
interested. This year is
Saskatchewan's centennial and I'm
almost certain there will be
something special to see and
experience. If you think you are able
to take it into consideration give Kim
Jo or Angela a call. They are waiting
to hear from you.
A note to remind you that your
thinking caps need to be exercised.
Annual meeting and annual
convention are coming up and
directors locally and provincially are
going to be needed.
I confess that not being able to get
out and about has left me with little
news and the column shows it. 1 will
try to make better contact with the
directors after the fair so I can make
this column more informative.
