way in which farm work was once
accomplished.
This year. in keeping with the
theme of corn, committee chair Roy
Berfelz says his committee has tried
to emphasize corn processing in the
equipment on display.
"We will feature corn shelling.
cutting and husking," he says. "It will
be educational for the children and
nostalgic for the older people."
Inside the big 80x220 -foot tent.
Berfelz says there will be an antique
knitting machine on display as well
as old VON uniforms and small farm
implements dating back to the 1850s.
A 1917 FWD truck, one of only
three known to exist. will be
exhibited as will a 1912 Buckeye
ditching machine from Wallenstein
which was used in Perth, Waterloo
and Wellington.
The committee has focused on
acquiring McDonald. Kemp and
Maxwell farm equipment as it was
manufactured in the county.
The Maxwell entries include a
grain grinder and a washing machine.
There will be demonstrations of
cutting logs and making shingles as
well as threshing by working
threshing machines throughout the
match.
Berfelz says that will be one of
the big differences in the
Perth County match — there
will be a lot of working
demonstrations.
Though the division was without a
committee for some time. once
organized, its members have pulled
together "tremendously", say Berfelz.
accomplishing the required task in
under one year.
Each of the approximately one
dozen members oversaw the
organization of the exhibition for
different makes of tractors.
contacting the tractors clubs to enlist
their assistance.
Things are "falling into place
well" says Berflez, and Echoes of the
Past will ring out across the 23 acres
which will be home to the antique
and historical displays.
Creating firsts through co-
operation and common goals may be
an underlying theme for the North
Perth match.
