The Rural Voice, 2005-04, Page 58Considerable effort has been
made towards developing sterile
trees, assuming there would be less
concern about GM trees if they
cannot cross-pollinate with natural
forest species. (Of course sterile
trees also typically grow faster
because they focus their energy on
growth rather than reproduction.)
Unfortunately, some species like
poplar could still reproduce asexually
and concerns have been raised about
possible ecological impacts of sterile

forests.
There could be some hope in this
technology for recovery of species
like butternut, elm and American
chestnut that have been impacted by
exotic diseases. Unfortunately the
research is very expensive and unlike-
ly to be carried out if there isn't pot-
ential for significant financial gain.
Some folks would argue that
biotechnology is no different than
genetic change that has been ongoing
for centuries through sexual

reproduction. The difference to me
appears to be the rate of change.
Natural systems previously were able
to evolve and adapt to change over a
long period of time. I'm not certain
that's possible at the current rate
