18 THE RURAL VOICE
Water Team in its response to the
original "white paper" on watershed
based source water protection last
April. The team pointed out there are
three potential sources for drinking
water in the Maitland watershed:
surface waters, shallow burden
aquifers and deeper bedrock aquifers.
While surface water might be
confined to the traditional watershed
boundaries, very little water in the
region comes from this source, it
said. Meanwhile shallow and bedrock
aquifers from which 45 per cent of
the population of urban
municipalities and 85 per cent of the
total population in the region draw
their water do not respect boundaries.
It noted that much of the bedrock
aquifers that people in the Maitland
Valley watershed take their water
from are fed by the Dundalk
highlands. It recommended that
watershed regions should be
established based on watershed
boundaries of the Great Lakes basins
and regional aquifers.
Simpson saw first hand the
difficulty of protecting water
sources. His group looked at
zones around wellheads based on the
distance water would travel
underground to reach the well in 50
days and two years. The proposed
areas did not run in an arc around the
well, however, and left out a
controversial quarry relatively close
to a well while affecting land farther
away in another direction.
In preparation of source water
protection plans, Schankula says that
the specifics of each landscape
apparently will be involved. If your
land is clay, for instance, you won't
likely be impacted by the plans as
much as those on more permeable
soils like sand and gravel.
Though the deadline for comment
is fast approaching, OFA will be
ready, Schankula says.
The OFA comments will include a
message to the government that if
there are costs for farmers to meet
new standards, farmers should be
compensated. The OFA's response
will also urge government to work
with agricultural groups to get
workable regulations for farmers.
"We'll be pointing out things we
want to see and things that won't
work for agriculture," she says.0
