At -first the idea was to keep the
meat in Perth County but with so
many animals being donated there
was soon a surplus to the needs of
local agencies and they started
looking outside the county.
Meat has gone to four locations in
London, three in Kitchener -Waterloo,
the Salvation Army foodbanks in
Ingersoll and Woodstock, the
Cambridge Food Bank, Wilmot
Family Resource Centre in New
Hamburg and the Strathroy Women's
Shelter.
f someone who's making a
donation, either of a cow or of
cash, wants to see the meat go to
a specific need, they try to
accommodate. The Osgoode Hall
lawyers association donated money
and so they delivered a shipment to
the Osgoode Community Kitchen.
On the same trip with a borrowed
freezer truck they had a real
experience delivering to Toronto's
gigantic Daily Bread Food Bank. "It
was a huge, huge warehouse,"
remembers Ritsma. "It was amazing.
Once again it made us realize there is
a need out there and if we can do
something good with the meat then
we'll continue to do so."
Hamburger is frozen in one pound
packages which are handy for
families. "It's a good size for families
that are cooking with it," says
Becker. Community kitchens just use
more packages.
"We've never had a complaint
about the product of'the packaging or
anything," Becker says. For
community kitchens it gives them
something . to spruce up other
donations like dried noodles or pasta.
One teen drop-in in Stratford had
cooking lessons for young people on
how to make their own meals with
hamburger.
"It's a real eye-opener when you
actually go there to deliver the meat,"
Becker says of the foodbanks and
community kitchens. "There was one
lady down in London, she had tears
in her eyes. She couldn't believe that
somebody was actually giving them
hamburger."
