The Rural Voice, 2004-10, Page 37i s e f r s my children's favourite books and toys saved for our infant grandchildren. Do you get the picture? We also have items inherited from our parents, many of them furniture or ornaments we treasure. But some — for instance that embroidered bedspread with the tattered fringe, which may or may not have been embroidered by my mother, or the mended Irish linen table cloth that takes forever to iron, may simply be symbols of a bygone day, a source of housewifely pride that is no more. Mother might laugh and say "I never really liked that bedspread much anyway, but Great Aunt Sarah gave it to me and I felt I had to keep it!" Do I have to keep everything that belonged to my mother? /must hasten to assure you that the problem has not become so bad that a casual visitor to our home would be aware of it. Our living areas are clear of debris and even the main floor closets are reasonably sedate. But please don't ask to visit the back room in the basement, to explore my sewing room or peer too deeply into the garage or tool shed. Like the squirrels, we are secret hoarders, preferring to maintain a veneer of normalcy. In recent years the original unwillingness to waste has been transformed into an even stronger reluctance to add to the destruction of the environment. I muddle away over what should go where in the reduce, reuse and recycle game. Is there anyone who needs or wants these items I wish to discard? It grieves me when I can find no possible solution other than the garbage heap. Sometimes items get stuffed back in the basement, so unwilling am I to do the deed. Add procrastination to my list of sins. Some people look at me with an odd expression when I talk about this. What are you — some kind of a kook? Others nod their heads in recognition of their own hoarding. So has this rant convinced me to change my ways? Will I abolish my junk depositories? Not likely. But I just might go through that basement one more time, after I finish my coffee and watching my cousin the squirrel that is.0 -\R. M.
