The Rural Voice, 2004-10, Page 234 of doors and the help of her husband for the heavy lifting, Brodie has earned herself recognition of which she is very honoured. "I am in some very good company," she says. "There are beautiful gardens in Grey County. Brodie, as well as Urban Home contest winner, Marjorie Davison of Meaford, credit the great rainy season for their lush gardens. "The season co-operated beautifully," says Davison. She, too, sees gardening as her hobby, one that she has been able to afford more attention since retiring from her teaching career. After being asked last year to be included on a local garden tour, Davison says, her repeat entry and the IPM competition this year allowed her to make a few changes in the display of her huge gardens. "It was a great thrill (to be named the winner) and I am delighted." The enjoyment of gardening theme continues with Sonja Scriven of Ayton, winner of the Farmstead division. "I have always enjoyed gardening and my husband (Bill) is good at maintaining the building so we work well together." It was a family affair for the Scrivens as their son took care of the weedwhacking. "We had a huge to-do list and the deadline spurred us on," says Scriven. Other than tidying up, a few fresh coats of paint and an attractive, natural, multi-level landscape with which to work, Scriven says they spent very little on preparing for the contest. "I am not competitive, but this was a lot of fun. We all pulled together and peaked at the right time," she laughs. Frank Beirnes, chair of the beautification committee, was very pleased with the level of participation as they were hoping for 150 participants, but 178 contestants presented their homes and yards for scrutiny. "Rural Homes was the biggest category," say Beirnes. Sites were visited, pictures were taken and a video of all the entries was shot.
