Liquid feeding has advantages both in pig health and in convenience for larger producers who. can afford the relatively high cost of the computerized system, she said. The system also requires computer skills and meticulous data entry because misplacement of a decimal point in typing a ration recipe into a computer can cause serious problems. For the pigs there are advantages particularly for weaner pigs through high daily feed consumption and high daily gain. When fermented feeds are used the lactic acid produced contributes to good gastro- intestinal health. For weaners, however, the Danes have discovered some disadvantages in their feeding systems with too much residual feed being left in the feed pipeline, leading to over -fermentation which reduces the synthetic lysine in the feed. The feed has too low a pH for young pigs so Danish producers have made use of a dry feeding system for the first two weeks after weaning (which is later in Denmark than in Canada). The problem is this requires two feeding systems, she said. However new feeding systems may change the picture because they flush out the pipeline with air pressure or water so there is no residual feed to ferment, Pedersen said. Under this system weaners are fed 10-12 times a day and dry feed can also be supplemented, but the system is expensive. For growing -finishing pigs and sows, fermented grain increases feed conversion ratios and decreases the incidence of Salmonella. The use of by-products reduces feed costs. Danish producers use ad libitum feeding particularly for weaners two weeks post weaning with a short trough with a sensor. Pigs are fed three to four times a day with feed mixed for each feeding period. Growing -finishing pigs and sows are generally on a restricted feeding system with a long trough that allows eating space for each pig. The pigs are fed from three to six times a day. Lactating sows generally are
