the province doesn't come through
with a program to replace the
Healthy Futures program.
Tom Edge of Environment
Canada said the study of pollutants
needs to be taken wider than just
bacteria. Nitrates and phosphorous
can also enter the surface water, he
said, with phosphorous promoting
algae growth that can be deadly for
aquatic life. As well salmonella and
Norwalk virus can also be
transmitted through water.
BSRA's Banks also worried about
what other contaminants might be
going into the water and worried
about the problems of algae growth.
MVCA's Beard reminded those
present that Huron County wasn't
completely in control of the quality
of water within its streams because
many of them started outside the
county's borders.
For Shewfelt the problem isn't
figuring out what to do but how to
find the money to do it. "We have the
recipe," he said. "We have to have
the yeast and the yeast is money." He
called on the federal and provincial

governments to provide assistance to
help take the steps needed to reduce
contamination.
Nelligan promised to bring key
members of the group back together
for a meeting early in the new year.
All this, of course, is fairly small
comfort to tourist operators living
with the fall -out of the national
black -eye the Lake Huron shoreline
received. They would probably agree
with Nigel Belchamber that
perception is the problem. "There
probably will be more bad press," he
predicted. "What can we do to
enchance the confidence of the
public?"
That' will be the challenge in the
coming months. Already Huron
County Council has passed a motion
to allow the health unit to employ the
services of a media consultant to try
to get its message across that
swimming on Lake Huron's beaches
is not dangerous. Getting the national
media to listen might be a more
difficult task.0
