The Rural Voice, 2004-01, Page 21actual number of nutrient units in
Huron County declined between
1981 and 2001, he said. "People see
new barns going up. They do not see
the empty barns." Yes the total
capacity of barns in the county would
have increased by 30 per cent since
4 1996 but there is space in empty
barns to match most of the increased
capacity, Vincent said.
As to whether the county can
use all the nutrients from
animals being raised in the
county, Charles Lalonde of OMAF
said the nutrient management
planning is just beginning and until
all farmers have plans, there won't be
figures available to show if crops in
the county can use the nutrients
being applied to the soil.
BSRA's Doug Banks called for
more alternatives to• spreading
manure on fields. He warned that
leadership of his organization is
being pressured by its membership to
look at legal action to improve water
quality.
"Without action, tourism
and propertg values will be
affected."
Joan Karstens, operator of
Brentwood on the Beach a large bed
and breakfast resort at St. Joseph
uttered a plea on behalf of lakeshore
operators. She said lakeshore
residents were spending a lot of
money on upgrading septic systems
and making other improvements to
water quality but she didn't see
farmers doing anything, she said.
"Without action, tourism and
property values will be affected," she
warned.
But Vincent informed her farmers
have been doing a lot of
environmental work, pointing out
that Huron County has the highest
participation in the Environmental
Farm Plan program.
Earlier, Phil Beard, general
manager of the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority had pointed
out that through programs including
the Huron Healthy Futures program.
there have been 800 water quality
improvement projects undertaken.
That was the kind of good news
that Nelligan, taking over as a
facilitator. collected in an inventory
