Sales of Source Qualified Ontario
Calves to be held in November
By Bonnie Gropp
A series of Source Qualified
Ontario Calf (SQOC) sales is
underway this fall under a new
program initiated by Beef
Improvement Ontario and the
Ontario Cattlemen's Association.
Brian Pogue and Jack McCoubrey
of Beef Improvement Ontario (B1O)
explained the program as they
presented Brussels Livestock owner
Len Gamble with official
certification as a licenced sales
facility for the SQOC program on
October 15. Other licence facilities
include Keady Livestock Market and
Ontario Stockyards at Cookstown.
SQOC was begun by BIO and the
Ontario Cattlemen's Association last
fall. The brand label calves will be
marked with an orange tag
guaranteeing several facts.
Each animal will be age and source
verified. Its genetics will be known.
There will also be process
verification such as the usual
castration and dehorning and the
more unique total cow herd
vaccination for BVD.
"Anytime you see a tag with
SQOC, there will be things you
should know about that calf," said
Pogue. "It's not a new concept, but
some of the specifications are
unique."
One of these is the age verification.
"Right now with BSE the States is
allowing boxed beef across the
border from animals that are less than
30 months old. We are currently
verifying age based on dentician,
meaning the belief that a calf will
have certain teeth at a certain age."
However, with the current BSE
situation, Pogue said the age
verification component of SQOC is
very important. "Initially when we
were looking at it, we thought the
program would be of some value
down the road. Obviously with the
state of the industry, age has become
a much bigger issue."
With SQOC information associated
with the birthdate of a calf is
submitted to BIO so the exact age
can be verified.
"This is an opportunity for specific
genetics and age to feed into brand
labelled product with the intention of
producing a product that is consistent
for the. consumer."
Pogue said they contacted Gamble
and other sales facility owners to
make them aware of the program.
"Once we did they wanted to know
what they could do."
The certified facilities will now
hold sales, beginning this fall
featuring SQOC calves. Cookstown
held its first sale October 16 and will
hold other sales on November 11 and
25. Keady will hold a sale on
October 31 while Brussels will hold
sales November 10, 17 and 24.
Producers of SQOC calves will fill
in a three-part form, with one portion
given to the salesbarn owners so they
can verify information.0
Outdoor Farm Show
sets new records
A record number of visitors and
exhibitors, topped off with three days
of fantastic weather, resulted in a
very successful tenth anniversary for
Canada's Outdoor Farm Show.
The energy level was high, the
demos were in full swing and the
lanes were crowded with more
people than ever during the three
days of the show, held September 9
to 11. Almost 600 exhibitors
showcased the latest products and
services in agriculture and food.
"The feedback we received from
producers and exhibitors was just
tremendous .and we were very
pleased with the success of the
Show," said Ginty Jocius, president
of Canada's Outdoor Farm Show.
"We are proud to celebrate 10 great
years and we look forward to
continuing our commitment to bring
the most technologically advanced
agricultural products and services to
commercial farmers for many more
years to come."
As part of the tenth anniversary
celebrations, a farm family tribute
starring Michelle Wright was held.0
