Because peacocks are native to warm climates, they spend the winter months in one of the barns. Visitors usually leave the farm with huge bunches of peacock feathers Though they were originally purchased as a novelty and their numbers have fluctuated throughout their reign, they've become as much a part of the farm as its residents. Currently 32,000 turkeys are raised on contract at the Wallace farm per year. Four bunches of day - olds arrive from Ohio at various intervals; three are kept in a brooder barn until they're nine weeks old and then shipped to the processor. The remaining bunch is put on range at seven weeks old and shipped at sixteen weeks. One hundred acres of barley and corn are grown for the herd of 500 farrow -to -finish pigs. Sixty acres are rented down the road for planting extra corn. One of Alvin's greatest passions is building machinery. Lawn rollers, sweepers, and mowers, log splitters and skidders, massive articulated tractors, and even a snowmobile have emerged from his work shop. Some he sells, most he keeps for use on the' farm. "I get an idea and can't sleep until I tackle it. It gives me such a great sense of achievement to see my ideas come alive," he explains. He has built an impressive succession of wood -burning stoves, one of which heats the house. Some of his inventions are used to obtain and split wood from nearby woodlots. In rare moments of leisure, he picks up the accordion; he enjoys playing tangos and polkas most. Clearly these 100 bountiful acres Alvin has always called home have blessed him abundantly in many, many ways. "It's a good life," he reflects. "You don't get rich farming, but I do it because I love it. This is where my heart is. I wouldn't do anything else."0 Farm, Commercial and Home Superior Propane wants to be your propane supplier of choice no matter what your needs are, and will work hard to earn and keep your business.
