to 48 hours notice of the rains arrival.
"Catchy drawer and sticky door,
coming rain will pour and pour."
"When dew is on the grass, no rain
will come to pass."
"When chimney smoke descends, our
nice weather ends."
Any meteorologist worth his salt
would say that one must not talk
about weather forecasting without
talking about air pressure and
moisture levels. Well, judging from
the available folklore our ancestors
certainly did not leave these out of
their equations. And apparently
some could literally feel it in their
bones: "The east wind brings aches
and pains!" probably refers to the
effects of a drop in air -pressure
associated with low-pressure systems
that may bring rain or snow. One
sign that our ancestors lived without
is the contrail (condensation trails)
left behind high -flying jets. If the
contrails disappear quickly, this
suggests little moisture in the upper
atmosphere and clear weather should
continue. However, the longer the

contrails linger the more moisture is
present, and the possibility of rain.
"If the morning sky is red, the ewe
and her lamb will go wet to bed."
While most of us now listen to the
daily weather forecasts being
broadcast each day, our ancestors
were probably able to do a fairly
good job all on their own by keeping
their eyes on the sky. Let's be
thankful we have the benefit of both.
After all, the rules -of -thumb provided
by the "old-timers" are probably
most meaningful when understood in
terms of modern meteorology. If
nothing else, practicing our own
forecasts will make us a little more
weather wise when we listen to what
the meteorologists have to say — and
when we step outside and have our
eyes on the sky.0
