The Rural Voice, 2003-09, Page 57recommendations. It was updated in
1973 and some of the suggestions are
either not available or not
recommended now.) The artist's
colour plates of some of the insects
and their stages are reminiscent of
botanical sketches done 80 years ago.
From this I know that my rose
caterpillars were to become Curled
Rose Sawflies. I have not identified
the second infestation in the garden
but it is not of larvae of the black
swallowtail. Swallowtails are more
interested in parsley, carrots and
other related plants and if you are
looking them up you have to know
they are called celery caterpillars.
Their caterpillars are large, smooth -
skinned, with a forked malodorous
retractile organs that can be thrust out
from an opening in the first thoracic
segment just back of the head.
The Red Admiral, Viceroy and
Painted Lady butterflies have spiny
caterpillars with horns on- the head.
From the written descriptions, the
caterpillars differ in colour and
markings within the species which
can make it a little more difficult to
identify.
Those pesky cabbage worms that
are making lace of your cabbage will
grow into white pieridae butterflies,
one of the most common butterflies
seen in our gardens.
To be able to better identify who
we are sharing our gardens with we
need to enter into the world of the
entomologists, professional bug
people. Maybe one of them will write
the ultimate gardening bug book. I
know I would buy one.
Knowledge is power and knowing
what is going on in your garden with
the insect world is a tool that can be
used to curb damage and encourage a
healthy balance of both beneficial
and not so beneficial insects. When
cleaning up the debris this fall, leave
some leaves in the corner of the
foundation for the ladybugs and
praying mantis. Keep an eye out for
furry cocoons. These are usually
moths — butterflies usually head
south. Smart bugs.
In the meantime there is a need for
a book that identifies caterpillars for
gardeners and gardeners need to plant
a few extra plants to share the
environment with our insect friends.0
