New tools address rural health-care shortages The shortage of health-care providers has become a serious issue in many rural communities. The Ontario Rural Council's Rural Health Strategy project has developed a series of new tools and resources to help rural communities address these shortages over the long-term. • a Rural Health Career CD-ROM — created to encourage youth to pursue a career in the health field. • Rural Health Website — www.ruralhealth.ca — contains rural health-related information, links to tools and resources, and an overview of the project. • Rural Health Forum Reports — summary reports of forums held across the province last fall and winter, including a summary and analysis of the asset workshops held in conjunction Staying on top of the issues Some of the rural ag-related concerns the Huron County Federation of Agriculture Board of Directors and Executive have been following in the past few months include: Mad Cow Disease (BSE), Ontario Smart Growth submissions, Source Water Protection Act, and the Huron/Perth Connection project. President Neil Vincent has been doing radio clips on these topics. Your Board and Executive work diligently for and with the farmers of Huron County by monitoring and lobbying for support. We encourage you to contact our directors with any concern or issues you may have.0 LOCAL WOMAN ACCEPTED FOR AALP Congratulations to Carol Leeming of the Municipality of Huron East (Tuckersmith Twp.) who has been accepted to the AALP (Advanced Agriculture Leadership Program) for Class 10. This program begins in Guelph in October 2003, and will continue for the next 19 months. AALP members study leadership, government, political process, economics, trade policies, global affairs, and other industry -related issues in Ontario, through North America and international study tours.0 with the forums. • Community Success Stories — successful approaches to recruitment and retention of health-care providers in rural communities. • Community Self -Assessment Tool — for communities beginning to address their health-care issues. • Identifying and working with Push - Pull Factors Tool — helping communities identify what is attracting health-care providers to, and repelling them from, rural communities, and devising strategies to address these factors. • Project Brochures — outlining the Rural Health Strategy and health career information for youth. The main goal of the Rural Health Strategy tools is to empower communities to develop strategies to address the chronic shortages of health- care providers in rural areas. Places to visit include a dairy farm, deer farm, nursery, beef farm, horse farm, pork display at the end of the tour.
