Info on-line helps to plot BSE strategies
The OMAF Livestock Technology
Team has produced a series of Info
Sheets to assist producers with
decisions while the investigation
comes to a close and Canada waits
on a decision to open the U.S.
Border.
The Info Sheets are:
1) Managing Credit and Cash Flow
as the BSE Investigation Unfolds
2) Feeding Cattle Beyond Optimum
Weights and Finish
3) Points to Ponder as the BSE
Investigation Unfolds
4) Information for Stakeholders on
BSE
The Info Sheets are available by
e-mail or in hard copy. You can find
them on the OMAF website

program to provide temporary
assistance to -help the farmers and
their partners continue to operate
while the U.S. border remains closed.
The Assistance Program will be
cost shared by the Federal
Government and participating
Provinces on a 60-40 basis. The
package has two key elements:
1. Payments to producers for cattle
owned as of May 20, 2003 that have
subsequently sold for slaughter. The
assistance will compensate producers
when the price of cattle falls below a
reference price based on the market
value in the US. Payments will be on
a sliding scale. Producers of other
ruminants will be eligible for
payments.
2. Governments will also offer
processors incentives to sell or
remove surplus meat cuts that were
produced after May 20 out of
inventory. These cuts have a low
domestic demand or are exported.
This will free up storage space to
allow processors to operate at
increased capacity.
Application Forms are available
through our web site
www.omaf.gov.on.ca or by calling
the Ontario Farm Income Disaster
Program (1-877-838-5144).
Application packages are available at
sales barns as well.
