For the Todds, the goal is to sell as much seed stock as possible and produce market lambs from the rams they eventually sell. In selling to others, JoAnn said they are looking for "consistent success", seeing others do well with the seed stock. "It helps others improve whether it is for purebreds or crossbreeds. We help create the characteristics they need." "Wc have a reputation fui reliability, dependability and quality," said JoAnn, "and that is what we try to maintain." A good showing at the Calgary Stampede led to a sale to Mexico That success is also evident when others advertise use of the Todds' stock. "You know then that you have made it," said JoAnne For the first time, Keith and Hugh headed west to the Calgary Stampede in 1998, doing very well, building up their name and making more contacts. They returned to Calgary in 2001 where another sale to Mexico was arranged. The consistent winning at the Royal and other shows has resulted in sales across Canada, throughout the United States and into Central and South America. When asked about their long term success, Hugh said there is some luck involved in choosing the right ram that will click with a ewe. However, Keith quickly adds that his dad seems to have a knack for spotting good animals. "He knows what will work with the bloodline." "Even if it doesn't work in the first generation, it always shows up in the second," adds JoAnn. A good environment, proper feed and management techniques are also high on the Todds' list of reasons for success.
