Many of the barns are beyond the point of renovation. Donaldson had first visited Russia 10 years ago but soon realized the Russians were not ready for Canadian advice. Having lived in a closed system for decades, many of the people in the swine industry had never travelled abroad and had no way of comparing the pigs they produced with other countries. Under the Communist system they had convinced themselves they had the best pigs. Donaldson points out the Russians aren't alone in fooling themselves. Our American neighbours, for instance, were sure they were world leaders until U.S. packers adopted a new meat grading system that regarded lean yield. Suddenly they were able to compare truckloads of Canadian commercial pigs with local truckloads and found there were differences of 7-8 per cent in lean yield. Canadian pigs also have a very uniform carcass. "The difference blew them away." Canada's grading system has rewarded quality for more than 30 years, Donaldson pointed out. That has meant 30 years of selection to produce quality, uniform animals. "At the same time the American genetic selection program was based on BS baffles Brains," he said. "It was the show ring mentality, with no emphasis on performance trials." By 2002, one Russian company at least, was ready to listen. The fourth largest processor in Moscow, the company was dissatisfied with the supply of market pigs they were receiving from within the country and were not totally pleased with the carcasses of pigs they had imported from Brazil, either. The company approached Donaldson wanting to establish a constant supply of quality, uniform hogs. Representatives of the company visited Donaldson and Groenestege in Ontario in April 2002. They travelled with Groenestege for several days visiting modern, multi - site Canadian barns. They also visited Total Swine Genetics Al Unit to see what a modern artificial insemination unit looked like, at the
