The Rural Voice, 2003-03, Page 45News Environmental funding renewed for Bruce County farmers "1'he Bruce County Federation of Agriculture has renewed the contract with the Agricultural Environmental Stewardship Initiative (AESI) which will provide grants to farmers in designated watersheds to address the regional impact of agriculture. Areas eligible for funding are, Deer and Pearl Creeks in Brockton, the Teeswater River and tributaries, Greenock Creek, Formosa Creek, Alps Creek, Kinlough Creek as well as Otter Creek in South Bruce. The aim of this project is to improve water quality in the area, increase soil health and wildlife habitat. Examples of projects that could be considered are fencing livestock from water courses, providing alternate water sources for grazing livestock, creating and planting natural filtration and buffer areas among waterways. Another example would be the installation of eavestroughs and downspouts linked to drains under barnyards, to keep the clean water out of a manure pack area. Ideas, plans and solutions will all be considered for funding when they show that an improvement to water quality will be the outcome. New for 2003 is the maximum grant per farm operator is $5,000, and your own labour can be counted in the total project estimate, but must not exceed the cost of materials. Each applicant must have completed an Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) to identify areas eligible for funding.
