The Rural Voice, 2002-12, Page 31"When thaw our guys they skidded and slid past them, but did manage to stop. They were charged with careless driving, because they did not have due care and attention." While processing these two, two more came towards them doing over 100. Seeing the group in their path, one driver had to "take the bush" to avoid a collision. "He comes flying out, angry as hell, then sees it's us," Lapworth chuckles. "But that was four careless driving charges within 10-15 minutes. That's how people die." For this reason, Lapworth promises that the presence of police on the trails will be an ever increasing one. "The problem in the past has been that at each detachment the only time officers could go out was when they had enough people. With SAVE we're dedicated to do that. We don't answer phones. We're on the trails. " And the majority of snowmobilers are glad to see them. "These snowmobile clubs want us there. They want to promote safety. Oh, you always get people bitching and griping that the cops are on the trails, but these are the type of people you don't want in your club. After all, if they don't break any laws why should it matter? These are the people who speed, or they may not have a licensed machine or they may like to tip a few." The SAVE officers aren't out to ruin anyone's fun. "We're trying to promote the image of safety on the trails. Take your machine to the cottage, do your drinking there and stay there." Also Lapworth reminds riders of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club motto: "If you don't know don't go." "Ice safety is something we can't talk enough about. If you go on ice stay on the marked trail. If you don't, you take your life in your hands." As well, once you're off the trails snowmobilers are not covered by OFSC insurance. Riding at night is another risk, if, Lapworth says, you don't alter the style of your driving. "It is completely different than during the day. Everyone overruns their headlights.
