year old brother, while rpy nine year
old sister stayed with us in the house.
There was a cold and raw east wind
that evening as Mother put us to bed
and it was she who found blood in
her handkerchief when she coughed.
Dad struggled up and Mother was
confined to her bed with the doctor
making daily calls. She had
pneumonia, which is still a serious
condition, but in the forties, without
the benefit of antibiotics, it was of
grave concern.
Apractical nurse, Miss

adored. We three older children also
got sick, and were restricted to
upstairs bedrooms, while my father
took over much of our care, tramping
up the stairs with Jimmy in his arms.
As we began to feel better, my
sister and I spent many hours in bed
perusing the Eaton's catalogue. My
problem was that at five I did not yet
have the reading skills to determine
the descriptions of toys, nor the math
Allis to figure out if I was within the
designated five -dollar limit.
Therefore I had to rely on my nine-
year-old sister to read to me and add
up the prices. This she did, usually
with good humour but sometimes,
when I changed my mind too often
