Autumn has arrived with the
vibrant colours of gold, orange and
reds. It was a good Thanksgiving
weekend: another special time to
remember and reflect and he thankful
for what we have.
The October RRFA meeting was
held at Stratton with Ken Fisher
chairing and Kim.lo Bliss. Jason
Teeple. Kelly Teeple. Angela
Halvorsen. Rudy Sinninghe. Betty
Salchert, Kristine Carpenter. Shirley
Morrish. Susan Boersma, James
Gibson and Reg Kaus attending.
Time changes at the end of this
month. Fall back one hour.
OFA's annual meeting and
convention will he November 25-26 at
the International Plaza Hotel in
Toronto. Canadian Western Agrihition
at Regina is scheduled for November
24-30.
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair
at the National Trade Centre and
Exhibition Place in Toronto is
November 8-17.
This year's Manitoba Farm
Women's Conference will be held
November 4-5 in Brandon Manitoba.
This is their 16th annual conference
and the theme this year is "Refueling
the Fire". For information on that
event. call Hazel at 204-748-3580 or
Joanne at 748-3873. November is
another busy month. •
Betty. Member Services Rep, has
everything under control for the
upcoming RRFA annual at Devlin this
year. Tickets have been distributed to
each director to sell, and the Blue
Grass Band is ready to roll for the
Saturday. October 19 dinner and
dance.
The Milk Producers will donate
milk and cheese for this event and
many businesses across the district
donate prizes. It is very much
appreciated by the Rain River
Federation of Agriculture executive,
who put the events together each
season.
The Canadian Farmers With
Disabilities Registry Conference will
be held November 2 at the Fort Garry
Hotel, 222 Broadway in Winnipeg this
year. Call Neil Enos at 204-436-2554
for further inforniatidn. Safety
colouring hooks are available for one
dollar from Mr. Enns as well. These
books were designed by a Grade 12
student, Justin Morrison from
Fannystelle. Manitoba. He's a cartoon
artist. Our local Safety Association
will he calling a meeting soon and
members are needed. to carry on the
work of the association.
Dryden dairy producers no longer
allow public tours on their farms for
health and safety reasons. but there is
Egli's Sheep Farm that hosts tours at
their animal park with many
agricultural displays from the dairy
producers along with promotional
material.
The Rainy River District
Cattlemen's Association had a clean-
up day October I. with Bob Woolsey.
Tom Morrish. Archie Wiersema. Len
Kuorikoski. Allen Jolicoeur. Clayton
Teeple and Shirley fixing. repairing
and scrubbing.. for the big sale on
Saturday. October 5. which was a very
positive sale. There was an excellent
quality of district calves available.
Buyers and producers were pleased
with the outcome. Over 1.070 head
sold. with prices averaging $1.35.
KimJo Bliss is preparing for the
Top -of -the -Line Sale on November 2.
There has been a date change because
of Bob Radhourn's Auction Sale on
Saturday. November 19. Bob had
already changed his sale date from
November 5 because of the calf sale.
We need a huge calendar at an
agricultural office to make district
planning work out for all organizations
and businesses who take in events.
With dates overlapping. many
interested people miss out on
happenings in the district.
The famous Golden Boy is once
again atop the Provincial Legislature
Building in the city of Winnipeg. It
was given a new coat of gold leaf
covering it. and the sheaf of wheat that
the statue holds. The statue was made
in France during WWI and given to
Manitoba to symbolize the province's
rich potential in agriculture and
northern development. While the
Queen was touring Canada. her
stopover in Winnipeg included the
unveiling of the newly glistened
beacon.
Saturday was a busy day at Clover
Valley Farmers' Market in Fort
Frances. Managers Pat Clysdale-
C'ornell and Deb Cornell were kept
busy making sure everyone had a
space. Ag Awareness (OAFE) along
with RRFA had a great spot to
promote Ag Awareness. This season
we featured apples. Betty's hot apple
cider was a hit along with our dried
apples and apple slices served with a
three choice topping of caramel
chocolate or honey. We handed out
recipes. colouring sheets for the kids
along with finger puppets. 1V^ missed
Kristine. but Betty and I sere able to
answer the questions thrown at us.

The lucky radio quiz winners were
Harvey Cochrane, Doug Olson. Lyle
Hyatt. Wanda Heinz and Irene
Bohcynski. An agricultural question
was asked over the local radio station
each morning during Ag Awareness
Week. Callers answered correctly and
received a beautiful gift basket of local
produce which they had to pick up at
the market on Saturday.
Ontario's Agriculture Minister. has
announced that a Nutrient
Management Program will come into
place as early as April I. 2003. Some
of Ontario's Larger Livestock
producers will he required to have
nutrient management plans. A phase-in
period will follow. with all farmers
required to have the plan by 2008.
Helen Johns said the legislation gives
Ontario livestock producers a
competitive advantage when it was
passed this sununer. The idea is to
assess new technologies from a
science -based perspective. Somehow.
something doesn't smell too good
anymore.
