The Rural Voice, 2002-11, Page 19some people think the tank, should he
replaced tomorrow and that's putting
pressure on distributors.
If the tank needs to be replaced,
many dealers are offering flat -rate
deals of $650 to $750. Most fuel
dealers are subsidizing the costs,
Rowe says, because they want to
keep their customers. A problem for
dealers right now is a shortage of
tanks. In some cases distributors are
loaning each other tanks to help meet
the demand.
"We're finding a few situations
(of tanks) that weren't installed to the
applicable codes," says Edward, but
most tanks are meeting the
requirements.
The comprehensive inspection to
be completed by May 2007 will look
at the entire system including an
inspection of the heat exchanger to
make sure there are no holes and a
smoke test to make sure there is no
carbon dioxide escaping from the
burner.
Rather than undergo two
different inspections at
different times, Rowe says
companies are trying to get both
inspections done at the same time.
The difficulty for suppliers, he says,
is the shortage of certified oil burner
technicians. While older heating
specialists have the necessary
experience, many younger people
don't want to get involved in the
dirty work of furnace servicing.
Edward explains further that the
best course for qualifying for an oil
burner technician certification is
offered by Kempville College which
makes it difficult for people in
western Ontario to relocate for the
weeks that are needed for training.
The Canadian Oil Heat Association
is working with Connestoga College
and Georgian College's Owen Sound
campus to try to get a course set up
in the western part of the province.
While servicing oil furnaces was
once a skill learned by one service
person at the elbow of another,
training now includes not just
knowledge of the combustion part of
the furnace but the micro -electronics
that make a high efficiency furnace
work so well. There are opportunities
for young people who want to take
this kind of training, Edward says.
For fuel suppliers with their own
technicians, the inspections are often
