Taking advantage of Ontario's Fall Harvest
pumpkin carving and painting event
on October 26, there are many other
activities such as colour tours, a craft
show, museums, musical and
theatrical events and even a haunted
heritage ghost walk.
At the other end of the information
spectrum is the site from Southern
Georgian Bay. Though it does list an
annual harvest tour on October 26-27,
there are no details. However, a
contact number is provided for those
seeking specifics. Go to
www.southemgeorgianbay.on.ca/tour
ism/inidex.html.
I then came across several private
farm operations that offer tours in the
fall or throughout the year.
One that 1 thought would be a lot of
fun, though particulars were limited,
was for a cranberry operation in
Saint -Louis -de Blandford, PQ. I
tracked it down through an article
written in a McGill University
magazine a few years ago. While it
does say the harvest occurs in the fall,
no dates were included, but a call to
the proprietor would help with future
planning. The article can be found at
ww2.mcgill.ca/ alumni/news/
sp97/cranberry.html.
With the preservation of forests
and agriculture often coming into
conflict a visit to the Fulton's Forest
and Farm, www.fultonsfarm.
com/indexft.htm, in Pakenham might
provide new insight. By clicking on
the forestry and farming button on the
left side, surfers can learn how to
connect with one entrepreneur who is
dealing with the challenges of
managing both.
Sundance Meadows,
www.sundancemeadows.on.ca/
farmtours.html, presents opport-
unities to meet the animals, go for
hayrides and picnic in a rural setting.
Another method for locating
harvest tours or farm markets which
offer a great selection of the season's
produce, is to search the tourism
section of each county's website.
Through a listing of special events or
attractions, directions can be found
for the creation of a weekend
getaway or nutritious and tasty
shopping trip in rural Ontario.

This has always been my favourite
time of the year. The weather begins
to cool (particularly appreciated after
this summer). the leaves turn
beautiful hues of red. orange and
yellow and the bounty from the
summer's labour is harvested.
It makes me think of weekend
getaways to cozy inns. hiking nature
trails and generally enjoying the
outdoors before the winter winds
begin to blow.
So with that in mind, I searched
the internes seeking a few suggestions
that would entice travellers out into
the countryside to take pleasure in
Ontario's harvest.
By simply entering "harvest tours"
on my Google search engine. I came
across one of the best -designed and
easy-to-use sites I have found in
some time.

the Meaford area, but also offer
visitors the choice of two apple tours
