The Rural Voice, 2002-10, Page 27concerns over E. coli and fecal
coliform bacteria, two of the greatest
stated concerns of those who oppose
large livestock operations. The
unstated objection — complaints
about smell — is also dealt with
because odour is. vastly reducd by
the treatment system, his pamphlet
says, thus reducing complaints from
neighbours. This might allow
spreading closer to the boundaries of
your property and allow negotiation
for expansion that might be blocked
by those who worry about the smell
of larger operations.
As well, digestion improves
nitrogen and phosphorous fixation,
which results in improved fertilizer
values, the literature says.
To reduce safety and NM
concerns even further,
Verellen's Farm Energy
company will offer solid separation
and filtration and ultraviolet water
treatment add-ons. The solid
separation system will reduce up to
80 per cent of water from the final
product to reduce the amount of land
required for spreading. The micron -
level filtration and subsequent ultra-
violet treatment will produce water
pure enough to be released into the
environment. The water can also be
used for irrigation on the farm.
As well as farm manure. the
system can also be augmented by
adding animal rendering waste and
other organic wastes such as fats and
oils from industry further augmenting
the income (adding 20 per cent fats
and oils can increase the output of
gas from a single pig by four times).
The actual digester would sit
outside at a farm location but the
control -room could be the room
housing the back-up generator which
most modern farms have as part of
their operations, Verellen says.
The only government guidelines
out there are for municipally -owned
digesters, Verellen says, so his
company has a lot of work ahead of it
to create the conditions under which
his plan can become simple for
farmers. Still, he'predicts, the next
year will see major changes in the
field of on-farm electricity generation
and manure treatment.°
