The Rural Voice, 2002-09, Page 71RAINY RIVER Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER August 20, 2002 The rains came down, the wind blew with vengeance, and the air was chilling like the oncoming of an early winter, but it didn't stop the annual fair supporters who attended this year's Fall Fair at Emo — another year of memory makers. The RRFA held their August meeting at Morley with President Bernie Zimmerman, Kelly Teeple, Ken Fisher, Jason.Teeple, Betty Salchert, Reg Kaus, Susan Boersma, Shirley Morrish, Kristine Carpenter, Rudy Sinninghe, James Gibson, KimJo Bliss, Angela Halvorsen and Linda Armstrong attending. Betty reported for member services with information on the Disaster Relief claims after the latest storm that hit the district in June of this year. Over 300 claims have been made with 20 of them tieing OFA members, five of which were very serious. The entertainment committee is busy with the upcoming annual meeting which will take place October 19 at the Devlin Community Hall. Dr. Chris from the NorthWest Animal Clinic, is on his much - deserved holidays for three weeks. We hope that there are not too many emergencies to overload Dr, Dan during this time. The new animal clinic that is to be built on the edge of town across from McDonald Motors is on hold until spring. Henry Miller from Fort Frances along with his Conservation Club, my 4-H members, Councillor Tom Morrish, several community adults and a three-year-old, showed up to pick the flowerheads off the purple loosestrife from a rapidly spreading area south of Devlin. In June of 200(), 5000 Galerucella beatles were released to feed upon the leaves of the plants. The local sportsmen's club is keeping a close monitoring of the results. It takes 5-10 years for the beetle population to be large enough to have an effect on the plants which is the only kind they can survive on. Flower heads are removed to keep the plants from re -seeding themselves. Purple loosestrife is a European plant that 1 . found in gardens and spreads rapidly, covering vast areas of wetlands displacing hundreds of species of wildlife. Any such plant can he reported to Henry at 274-9606 or the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. They will let you know how to best eradicate them.
