school children through the match to
the various education stations in a
coordinated manner. Others — both
children and adults — will be able to
visit any areas at their own leisure.
There'll be learning opportunities
related to the soil and environment.
cropping and equipment, animals,
farm and rural safety. and
agriculture's rich heritage. Especially
designed for the younger children –
from pre-school to Grade 1 — is an
activity centre that will feature a
Targe sandbox filled with corn and
toy equipment.
Bev Hughes will be drawing on
the talents of as many as 500
volunteers and exhibitors as
he chairs the Antiques and Historical
Committee for the 2002 IPM.
The farmer and retired elementary
teacher is working closely with
members of both the Ilderton-based
Tri -County Heritage Club and St.
Thomas -based Kettle Creek Pioneers.
Planned is a display showing the
evolution of tractors over the past
century. Represented will be at least
one model from each decade.
Equipment used over the years for
working the land and planting will be
accessible. Secondary tillage
equipment will actually be pulled
through the soil prior to the match so
that visitors can better understand the
purpose of each piece.
There'll be a variety of threshing
demonstrations. Both tractor and
steam engines will be used as the
power source.
Corn processing, as carried out on
Ontario farms, will also, be featured
in live demonstrations. Visitors to the
match will be able to see how
