must be eliminated
from food chain
Re: Deadstock for Rendering
Over the past year Rothsay has
participated, with limited success, in a
campaign to eliminate
Sulfamethazine Residues from
deadstock materials. All producers are
aware of the importance of export
markets.
While low levels of sulfa residues
are acceptable in Canadian markets
(less than 1.0 PPM), other markets
such as Japan allow only negligible
amounts of sulfa residues (less than
0.05 PPM). A positive sulfa residue
finding in Japan could lead to
Feedback
immediate rejection of the meat and,
in the worst case, a potential ban from
the market. The economic costs to all
would be significant, if key export
markets close, as a result of a few
producers who elect to take huge risks
by introducing sulfa components into
the food chain.
Rothsay has completed extensive
research on Sulfamethazine over the
past year. All Sulfa Compounds
represent the trigger that could have
our meat products banned from other
countries. While Rothsay is aware of
the important service we provide the
farming community, we believe that
producers must share the
responsibility of maintaining the
integrity of Canada's food system,
particularly as it applies to sulfa
residues.
Effective September 15, 2002 all
dead animals that have any Sulfa
Compounds in their system will no
longer be acceptable for Rendering.
All producers will again be asked
to sign new forms stating that "No
Sulfa Compounds will be found in the
animals they are providing to

rendering". In the event that testing
reveals the presence of sulfa residues,
deadstock collection services will be
cancelled for this producer.
We are appealing to all Ontario
producers, and the Ontario
government, to take this problem
seriously and help all of us find a way
to eliminate Sulfa Compounds from
the food chain. Our new policy is a
step in that direction and represents
responsible business practice and our
company's commitment to food
safety. We all need to do our part to
ensure the security of Canada's food
chain.0

Thanks for good
sheep coverage
On behalf of the Ontario Sheep
Marketing Agency's board of
directors, I want to express to you our
appreciation of the regular and
positive sheep coverage that The
Rural Voice has given to our industry
over the past year.
In particular, the two feature
articles in August 2002 magazine, as
well as the special focus on lamb
recipes in this issue was really great
to see. It has been tremendously
satisfying to see The Rural Voice
providing significant coverage of all
aspects of the sheep industry — from
lamb promotion' through the Western
Ontario Lamb Producers Association
right through to a growing dairy
industry with Ewenity Dairy Co-
operative and others.0
