The Rural Voice, 2002-07, Page 27capital and a gardening operation,
which is part of the McQuails'
farming operation, is a way of
starting small.
He began studying toward that
goal when he began to work for the
McQuails during a co-op term from
school in September of 2000. Last
year the Wingham resident stayed on,
learning while working shoulder -to -
shoulder with the McQuail family on
their diversified operation that
includes a community share garden,
an orchard and livestock.
Dixon's been joined this summer
by Jenn McMullen of Toronto who is
also apprenticing at the McQuail
farm. "I want to see if this is
something 1 want to do," says
McMullen.
She knows what she doesn't
want to do. Her first year
working on a farm was a totally
different experience. That summer
was spend on a 2,000 -acre farm in
Manitoba that was the opposite to the
McQuail farm. That farm, she says,
was part of a system that is
destroying communities. The
McQuails, with their "community
share" operation are building a
community instead. (Under a
community share garden, consumers
subscribe in advance for a share of
each week's production from the
garden with the weekly output being
divided between each full
shareholder.)
"I want to help build
communities," McMullen says.
The apprentices are totally
different than the volunteers who
come to the farm for shorter periods
through the World Wide
Opportunities on Organic Farms,
explains Fran McQuail. That
program, which the McQuails also
participate in, is designed to let
people travel the world and
experience life on organic farms.
These are short-term stays, however,
says McQuail and they've found that
for people to really learn and be of
help on the farm, apprenticeships are
much better.
Draft understandings are worked
out with the apprentices, she says,
with it spelled out what the
apprentices hope to learn during their
stay and what is expected of them.
For Peter, in his second year at the
farm, that teaching aspect has moved
