But early summer offers an opportunity to tackle the problem, because perennial weeds are now starting to move food to their roots. Systemic herbicides like Amitrol or glyphosate (Roundup, Touchdown, etc. - see Publication 75 for a full list of products with glyphosate) used at the right rate and the right growth stage offer long- term control of perennials. Many broadleaf perennial weeds are just approaching the sensitive stage for treatment with a systemic product like Amitrol, Roundup or Touchdown. For best effect, apply at these stages: Canada Thistle - early flower bud Milkweed - flower bud Bindweed - full flower Quackgrass - 3 to 4 new leaves (mid- summer is not usually the best time to control quackgrass as it stops growing in the heat). The registration of Lontrel for vetch control in apples can also be very useful now. Apply at the early flowering stage of vetch as a spot treatment. Check the rates on the label for the weed you are controlling. There are 3 rate ranges: the lowest is for annual weeds, the mid-range is for Canada thistle and quackgrass, and the highest range is for other broadleaf perennials. Caution with systemic herbicides: Avoid contact with crops or to valuable trees like windbreaks. Wick -wiping weed patches can help minimize the risk to valuable plants. Use a two per cent solution (2L in 100L water) of glyphosate (Roundup) in a wick applicator. Remember that these chemicals may circulate in your trees for several Continued on Pg. 49
